Useful information helps. Reckless action does not.

AutoWatch community safety principles for sharing stolen-vehicle alerts, submitting sightings and avoiding confrontation or harmful speculation.

The community role

The public can be valuable eyes and ears when a stolen vehicle is circulating. That role is to observe and report safely, not to investigate people, confront drivers or organize pursuit.

Share the vehicle, not accusations

When sharing an AutoWatch alert, focus on the vehicle information shown on the alert. Avoid naming or accusing people unless that information comes from an appropriate official source and is lawful to share.

Good sighting information is factual

  • where the vehicle was seen;
  • when it was seen;
  • which direction it was travelling;
  • what visible features matched the alert;
  • what could be safely photographed.

Stop when safety changes

If observing the vehicle would require following it, getting closer, entering private property, blocking traffic or confronting anyone, stop. Submit what you already know.

Do not put yourself or anyone else at risk to improve a sighting report.

Help the right people see the right information

AutoWatch works best when vehicle information is accurate, sightings are reported promptly, and everyone keeps safety first.
